In fact, the E71 remains hugely popular amongst working professionals for its push email and PC-like interface.
The newest edition, the E72, looks almost identical to the E71 and E63. It has almost exactly the same dimensions, weight and basic features.
However, since it's a new model, it naturally has some improvements over its older counterparts and it certainly stands out in many ways.
Not untouchable
One of the very first things you will notice about this model is that the execute button is somewhat of a touchpad. This is called Optical Navi. By flicking your finger in a certain direction, the button moves the cursor without the need for any button to be pressed. Although there are cursor buttons around the execute button, it certainly is a fun feature to have and everybody notices it.
Unfortunately, the sheer amount of buttons on this model (and the others too) makes it difficult to navigate, especially if you have big fingers. For some, however, having a direct link to the most important features right up front is important. It certainly saves you a lot of time once you get used to it.
With this model, the LED light around the cursor illuminates periodically and flashes when there is a message or missed call. I found this aesthetically pleasing and also quite informative.
Although this may seem negligible, the screen is also slightly bigger on this one - its 2.4in as opposed to 2.36in on the older model.
Feature upgrade
The E72 has a 5-megapixel camera as compared to the E71 (3.2-megapixels) and E63 (2-megapixels). What is really interesting is that this model has an Optical Navi autofocus to replace traditional "half-press" technology.
As mentioned earlier, the execute button acts like a touch screen. Therefore, to autofocus, you simply need to rest your finger against it and then properly press the button to take the picture.
The memory is also greatly extended. It has 250MB internal memory with a 4GB MicroSD card bundled with the phone. It also supports up to 16GB MicroSD cards which is great news for those who felt that the previous models did not have enough memory to support their "never erase" lifestyle.
When you place the E72 next to the E71, you'll realise that the newer version is also faster at processing commands. Unsurprisingly, the processor has been upgraded to 600MHz, almost double the power of the E71. This is vital, especially if you are a professional that needs to get things done fast and do not have the time to wait around for the phone to respond.
The speakers are nothing to rave about. In fact, we would argue that they are not nearly loud enough to be effective as a music player or alarm clock.
This can be frustrating as many people depend on their phones to be both, so volume and bass are not irrelevant - even on a business smartphone in my opinion.
It does not seem too much to ask to have the ability to hear your phone ring from the next room, does it?
Surfing and the rest
The E series phones are not the best for surfing, there just seems to be too many buttons to make it simple and enjoyable. However, it is built for push e-mail and messaging is fantastically easy. Indeed, if you need it to stay connected with your office or significant other, the E series phones allow you to do it in the most efficient way.
It has a file manager application that lets you keep track of all your downloads and other data. You can also make categories for files if you feel it necessary to separate work and play.
But if you are bored and just want to surf the Net to see what is new, you will quickly grow tired of how long it takes to get from A to B. Perhaps we have been spoilt by touchscreen smartphones.
The A-GPS works as well as Nokia's in-house road navigation works on any model. Now that Ovi maps are free to download, it may be even more worthwhile to have a phone with A-GPS.
Conclusion
The E72 is miles above its other E series counterparts (except for the E90 perhaps). It looks better, it feels sturdier and packs a lot more punch than the rest. True to form, it is an executive's phone in the sense that it has great e-mail messaging and file managing capabilities. It is not the best phone for entertainment, media playback or surfing though.
Pros: Fast; Optical Navi very useful; efficient phone for executive-types.
Cons: Too many buttons; sub-standard speakers; surfing the Net is tedious.
